Evaluation of the Effects of Morphine on Sex Hormones in Wistar Rats

Background and Aim:Morphine is one of the most important alkaloids of opium family that is the most effective combintion of family as well. Morphine is a narcotic analgesic and is very strong. Due to the use of morphine and its derivatives, applying the effect of this substance on the body's hormones, especially sex hormones is very important. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of morphine on sex hormones and the effect of morphine on gender differences.
Materials and Methods:The study, an Applied study in which 38 Wistar rats (wistar) was used. In the blood serum were measured 17 beta-estradiol, progesterone and testosterone using biochemical kits .Discussion:Our study shows that testosterone levels within 1 week after taking morphine compared with the control group showed a significant decrease. This decrease morphine consumption continues until the fourth week. Our study shows that hormone levels in the first and second weeks, the first and third difference is not significant. The progesterone in between the second week than the first week of morphine showed a significant reduction (002/0 P <) in mice, according to sex, but the comparison between the second and first weeks was not significant
There was no relationship between morphine and estradiol levels.
Conclusion: The results show a significant decrease in testosterone with morphine. This reduction would be associated with decreased libido and male fertility. The hormone progesterone indicate that this reduction could be significantly reduced morphine consumption and maintenance status of the embryo at this stage of pregnancy related.
