The effect of medicinal agents’ intervention on laboratory tests results is a well-known and important issue that should be considered to improve the quality of laboratory services. The effects of corticosteroid drugs such as dexamethasone, methylprednisolone, and prednisone on the some laboratory tests, such as induction of the blood glucose concentration, suppressing TSH level, increasing the number of leukocytes and the absolute increase of neutrophils, and increasing the amount of hemoglobin can lead to inappropriate and sometimes harmful medical decisions. This manuscript reviewed the effects of dexamethasone consumption on laboratory tests result which may encounter laboratories to some preanalytical errors. Since some of the medical personnel may not be aware of this issue, the close relationship of the laboratory and clinicians in the possible ways can improve the outcome of medical workup of patients. There for informing the laboratory staffs about the use of drugs can be very useful in interpreting the laboratory test results. Therapeutic interventions and its possible effect on the results of laboratory tests should be reported as comments to inform medical staffs about possible confounder of test results. For any reason that the patient has been treated with dexamethasone injection, it is recommended to go to the laboratory for the mentioned tests at least 48 hours after the last injection.
