Introduction and Objective: Cancer is one of the leading causes of human mortality worldwide. Standard treatments for combating this disease include surgical approaches, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, which are recommended by physicians based on the patient's condition and disease stage. However, patients undergoing these treatments may suffer from severe side effects and adverse outcomes. Recently, natural products have gained attention as an interesting and promising strategy in cancer treatment due to their high bioavailability, safety, minimal side effects, and, most importantly, cost-effectiveness. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of quercetin on stem cell biogenesis as a novel perspective in cancer therapy.
Materials and Methods: In this review study, all registered articles in electronic databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed from 2011 to 2023 were searched and analyzed using specialized keywords, including Quercetin, Mesenchymal Stem Cells, and Cancer.
Findings: The initial search yielded approximately 200 articles, which were narrowed down to 25 after preliminary screening and exclusion of irrelevant studies. Quercetin, a natural flavonol compound widely found in the daily diet, has demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on tumor progression through various mechanisms. Additionally, clinical and preclinical studies have shown that stem cell-based therapies, particularly those involving mesenchymal stem cells, hold great promise for treating many human diseases, including cancer, due to their remarkable potential for differentiation into various cell types and low immunogenicity.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, quercetin, as a flavonoid compound influencing multiple cell signaling pathways, may open new horizons as a potent therapeutic agent in the treatment of various cancers.
