Abstract:   (1312 Views)
Shigella dysenteriae produce an exotoxin called shiga toxin, similar to the shiga toxin produced by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. Stx toxin encoded by phage is classified into two subgroups Stx1 and Stx2. Stx2 toxin has been isolated mostly from humans. Antibiotic treatment of Stx-producing bacteria is not recommended because it induces the expression of both toxins and allows them to spread. Stx does not appear to be actively exported. Stx is an AB5 toxin, and its B subunit mediates binding to the membrane glyolipid globutriaosylceramide (Gb3). The B subunit induces endocytosis at the plasma membrane. Accumulation of vesicles near the endosome in the toxin-sensitive cell leads Stx to be disported from the endocytosis pathway. The purpose of this review is to study the toxins of Shigella dysenteriae and enterohemorrhagic E. coli and their mechanism of action.
