The Relationship between Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis and Cardiovascular Diseases

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) cause the deaths of 17.9 million people per year, corresponding to 31% of all deaths. Of these, 85% are directly associated with stroke and heart attack. CVD is a term used to describe a variety of diseases and disorders that affect the blood vessels and ultimately the heart. Atherosclerosis, heart failure, and hypertension are a few among several conditions which can result in CVD. The gut microbiota refers to trillions of commensal microorganisms located in the intestine in a certain proportion, whose balance is easily disturbed by food intake, lifestyle, and environment. There is increasing evidence of the influence of the gut microbiota on hypertension and its complications, such as chronic kidney disease, stroke, heart failure, and myocardial infarction. Intestinal microbiota and metabolites are associated with increased blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and systemic inflammation and are known as MI factors. Gut microbiota and its metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA), lipopolysaccharides (LPS), and trimethylamine- N-oxide (TMAO) impact cardiovascular health. Gut microbiota composition is largely determined by exposure to dietary factors. Characterizing the gut microbiota dysbiosis in different diseases and determining a causal relationship between the gut microbiota and disease can be beneficial in formulating therapeutic interventions and reduction of associated complications. As CVD is the leading cause of deaths globally, investigating the gut microbiota as a locus of intervention presents a novel and clinically relevant avenue for future research. |
