Abstract:   (479 Views)
Vacuolization of neutrophils and monocytes is a common finding in infectious disease and also as lab artefact, but vacuolization of mature lymphocytes and hematopoietic precursor cells is unusual and may be a reflection of lysosomal storage disease and other abnormalities. The peripheral blood smear is a rapid and cost-effective method for screening lysosomal storage diseases. Lysosomal storage diseases are a group of genetic disease with mutation of genes involved in lysosomal function that breakdown many chemical substances. Accumulation of metabolic byproducts due to metabolic disorder can present as vacuoles in lymphocytes.
